PREP ROUNDUP: Kempton adds to Post Falls' record-breaking week

| April 17, 2021 1:20 AM

TRACK AND FIELD

LEWISTON — When Post Falls distance coach Jessie Ward asked senior Brycen Kempton what his plan for the 3,200-meter run was heading into Friday’s Sweeney Invitational, it was pretty simple.

Start fast, then hold on.

Kempton, who signed in January to run cross country at Lewis-Clark State, broke the Post Falls school record in the 3,200, winning in 9 minutes, 37.39 seconds. The previous mark was set by Ron Webster in 1990 (9:37.60).

“He told me Nikolai (Braedt of Sandpoint) and I are going to go out in 4:50 in the first mile, then just hang on to come in under 9:38 and hopefully get the school record,” Ward said. “Even though it was going to be a 20-second PR, he was confident he could do it because he went sub-10 (9:57.36, his previous PR) at Timberlake in worse conditions. He is not the most naturally talented runner and anyone who watched him race as a freshman would never believe that he would one day break a 31-year old school record. I’m so happy for him to see his hard work and commitment pay off in such a big way. He has earned it.”

Post Falls junior Sammie Wood, who broke the school record in the 800 during Tuesday’s Inland Empire League meet at Sandpoint, shattered the school record in the 1,600 in winning 5:03.87. The previous mark was set by Sydney Shanahan in 2019 (5:07.99).

“Sammie just had a phenomenal day,” Post Falls head coach Wade Quesnell said. “She’s running really well right now and almost broke the school record in the 3,200 as well. All of our kids ran and competed really well all around.”

The Trojans swept team titles in the meet, which was scheduled for Moscow, but moved to Lewiston to allow for more spectators to be able to attend.

Other double winners included Angelyca Chapman of Lake City (200, 400), Braden Dance of Coeur d'Alene (800, 1,600) and Lily Phenicie of Coeur d'Alene (shot put, discus).
