| April 15, 2021 1:20 AM

BASEBALL

COEUR d’ALENE — Cole Rutherford had three hits and two runs scored for the Post Falls Trojans in a 4-3 win over the Coeur d’Alene Vikings in the first game of an Inland Empire League doubleheader at Ted Page Field on Wednesday.

Liam Paddack hit a solo home run in the second inning for Coeur d’Alene in the opener.

“Both Tyson and CD threw really well for them today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “We hit the ball fine today, but Post Falls just responded to everything we did. We’d score some runs, and they’d respond. Post Falls played really well and we were playing catchup from the first inning. Troy (Shepherd) had his best outing of the year, but we just couldn’t get that big hit when we needed it.”

In the nightcap, Spencer Zeller went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBIs as the Trojans beat the Vikings 13-7 to complete the sweep. CD Sharples had three RBIs for Post Falls (10-4-1, 8-2 IEL), which travels to Sandpoint in a single game on Saturday at noon.

“We’ve got a scrappy bunch,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said. “The guys just kept fighting, hung together and fought through it. We had some big timely hits in that second game and a few of those 2-out hits that we hadn’t been getting in previous games.”

Andrew Karns drove in two runs in the second game for Coeur d’Alene (7-5, 6-5), which hosts Moscow in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
