Gary R. Domme, 68

| April 14, 2021 1:00 AM

It is with profound sadness that the family of Gary Domme shares that he passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2021, at his home after a prolonged illness. He was 68. Gary was born on May 1, 1952, in Chicago to the late Bob and Mary (Goss) Domme. While he spent his early years on the north side of Chicago, he moved with his family in the mid-1960s to Elk Grove Village, Ill. He was a 1970 graduate of Elk Grove High School.

He began his apprenticeship with Sheet Metal Workers Local 73 in Chicago in June 1973 and became a journeyman in 1977. His trade led to work on dozens of significant industrial and commercial projects throughout the Chicago area.

He met Margi in June 1973. She worked as a teller at the bank where he cashed his first paycheck from working in the trades. He asked her to marry him after three weeks of dating and she happily accepted. They were married on Oct. 19, 1974, in Wheaton, Ill. His son, Greg, was born in August 1976, followed by a daughter, Kristina, in September 1980. Both are graduates of Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Flossmoor, Ill. and both are Navy veterans. He was a proud grandpa to Greg’s sons, Gary (born in 2003) and Zach (2005), and Kristina’s daughter, Abby (also 2005).

Gary and Margi traded a life in the Chicago suburbs for one on 10 acres in Athol, Idaho, in July 1999. Gary joined Sheet Metal Workers Local 66 and later Local 55 in Spokane, Wash. and worked on many HVAC and architectural sheet metal projects, both locally and out of town. He retired from his trade in August 2011 and received his 40-year pin in October 2016.

Once settled into a rural lifestyle, Gary took up woodworking as a hobby, dabbling in all aspects of the art. He would go on to win a multitude of blue and grand champion ribbons at the North Idaho Fair for his beautiful projects. He also loved to hunt and fish and was a wonderful cook and prolific baker.

He joined the Rathdrum Lions Club and was even named Lion of the Year a few years ago. The club could always count on him to work the booth at the Fair, selling tickets for the raffle car.

He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Margi; son, Greg Domme of Post Falls; daughter, Kristina Williams of Spokane Valley; grandsons, Gary and Zach Domme of Mesa, Ariz.; granddaughter, Abby Williams of Spokane Valley; and yellow lab, Lucy. Also surviving Gary are his mom, Mary Domme; brother, Rick Domme; and sister, Debbie Asmus, all of Gaylord, Minn.; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and lots of friends.

There are no services planned. Yates Funeral Home is entrusted with final arrangements. Please visit Gary’s online memorial and sign his guest book at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
