STUDENTS: Letters should elevate

| April 9, 2021 1:00 AM

Thank you for printing opinion letters from students of Lakes Middle School, an assurance that letter writing is not becoming a lost art.

However, I cannot ignore the adult level of the topics, obviously beyond a young teen’s level of accurate perception and their ability to ascertain the logical progression of cause and effect. “Science” says the human brain is not fully developed until age 26. So I am suggesting that these frightening, depressing, and dark subjects should be replaced with topics that enlighten, encourage and elevate.

The teachers could have guided the direction of the assignment or was that the desired direction. They are still children, let them be so. And additionally, how about more history and civics in their early years. This would give them the educational background needed to make informed opinions. Teach them to think not emote. Teach them to be citizens not activists.
