NIC SOFTBALL: Cardinals roughed up by Division II Humboldt State

| April 2, 2021 1:10 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — For a team that’s not playing a home game during the 2021 season due to COVID-19 restrictions, the NCAA Division II Humboldt State Lumberjacks made themselves right at home at Memorial Field on Thursday.

The Lumberjacks, of Arcata, Calif., opened the top of the first inning with solo home runs by Megan Holt and Haley Suter on the way to a 13-4 win over the North Idaho College Cardinals. Humboldt State, which played six games in Montana, including two at Carroll College in Helena, Mont., on Wednesday, was looking for games while passing through the area on its way to play some teams in Western Washington next week, and reached out to NIC coach Shay Fuson last week.

Humboldt was able to schedule single games with NIC and Community Colleges of Spokane on Thursday and today, both at Memorial Field.

Taryn Vanderwiel had two hits and an RBI for NIC (1-1), which beat Spokane 25-16 at home on Tuesday in the program’s first game at Memorial Field since 2016. Audrey Walker and Addison Riobordy had an RBI each for NIC.

Humboldt State improves to 6-1.

NIC and Humboldt State will play again today at Memorial Field starting at 2 p.m. After that game, Humboldt will play CCS at Memorial.
