COEUR d'ALENE — A mix of Lake City varsity and JV players faced a stern test in perennial 3A girls soccer power Coeur d'Alene Charter on Monday, and it took some late scoring for the Timberwolves to prevail.

Brea Wiedener's goal off Sammie Veare's assist in the game's 71st minute broke a 1-1 tie, and the host Timberwolves earned a 3-1 nonconference victory.

"This is a group we wanted to see play together, and Charter's one of the best teams in the area," Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. "They have one of the best front lines out there, and we had to earn everything we got.

"Once we ironed some things out, I thought our girls played very well," he added. "It was a hard-fought match ... this might be the best team (Charter) has had, and Stacy (Smith) is a great coach."

Sarah Hines' penalty kick put the Panthers (8-1-1) ahead nine minutes into the game, and Lake City's Taytum Curtis tied the score later in the first half, off Lily Tweedy's assist.

The game remained tied until Wiedener's score, with Tweedy adding a late goal to hand Charter its first defeat of the season.
