SUV crashes into building

HAYDEN — A driver lost control of the SUV he was driving early Thursday and crashed into a building.

There were no injuries.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office and Northern Lake Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a vehicle that lost control and ran into a business on Government Way.

A press release said Shaylan W. Mattinsahoss, 22, Spokane, was northbound approaching Honeysuckle in a 1995 Chevy Suburban when he started to hydroplane on the wet roadway. "The driver accelerated to try and regain control, however this resulted in him crossing the centerline and going into oncoming traffic," the release said.

The vehicle then jumped the curb on the west side of Government Way and slid sideways into the Fuki Restaurant building, which was damaged.

Deputies determined that alcohol was not a factor, "but even through the driver stated he was only going 25 mph it was determined that speed along with the vehicle’s bald tires were a cause of the accident."

Lili Li, owner of Fuki, said the restaurant remains open, though two private rooms had to be closed because of the damage.

"Because of the accident, the two big windows out front are boarded up," Li said, "so people were thinking we are closed. But we are open."
