CDA: Fond reminiscing continues

| September 25, 2020 1:00 AM

Follow up to Bernita Lien Carlson’s recent My Turn. Those were the good ol’ days.

I want to go back a few more years, when the National Guard was called up for the Korean War in May 1951. My mother, Esther Jarrett, had to go get my diploma from school as we left before graduation. The National Guard took about 500 from Bonners Ferry to Lewiston.

When we came back, we were looking for jobs and settling down. I needed a car and went to Idaho First National Bank, where Ace Walden met me. He stated how much do you need and I said about $200 for a down payment. He reached in his pocket and gave me the $200 and said pay me when you can. It was paid back fast.

I later went to his 100th birthday party in May 2007. This was in the white house at 805 Sherman, where I had once rented the upstairs apartment in 1956 when first married. Now it is the new Museum of North Idaho.

Bernita, you left out the short-and-thicks at the Boat Drive where Hap was glad to see us. These were a banana split in a sundae glass.

The dances at the Eagles club, square, two-step and Schottische. The famous Teepee room bar in the Brunswick where you played the slots for a $12 jackpot. Then had a Whopper or Awful Awful. Now part of the Iron Horse.

There are many of you still around who can continue with their stories.
