Lakeland cancels football game following positive COVID-19 test

Due to the contact tracing process stemming from the discovery of positive COVID-19 tests at Lakeland High School earlier this week, Lakeland school officials canceled tonight’s varsity football game in Rathdrum between Post Falls and Lakeland.

School officials also canceled Thursday night’s junior varsity and freshman football games between the two schools.

“Based on the contact tracing, and the information we have, we just felt it wasn’t in the best interest to play those games,” Lakeland High principal Trent Derrick said.

He said no other Lakeland sporting events have been affected, and said the football team “does not have to quarantine.”

Homecoming activities at Lakeland this weekend were also canceled. Homecoming was rescheduled for Oct. 16, when Lakeland is scheduled to host St. Maries.

Lakeland’s varsity football team is scheduled to play at Timberlake next Friday, then travel to Moscow for the 4A Inland Empire League opener with the Bears on Oct. 9.

“We don’t believe it will affect next week’s game, or the one after that,” Derrick said.

This is the first known cancellation of a football game in District 1 due to positive COVID tests.

Lakeside’s volleyball program was shut down for two weeks earlier this month due to a positive test.

A positive test within the Bonners Ferry girls soccer program led to that program being shut down through today.
