COEUR d'ALENE — Waiting out restrictions from the pandemic and games postponed due to smoky skies was worth it for the Coeur d'Alene High girls soccer team.

The Vikings earned their first outright 5A Inland Empire title since 2009 on Tuesday night, shutting out visiting Lake City 2-0.

"It's the first time we've won the league in over 10 years, and to do it under the lights against Lake City made it even more special," CHS coach Andy Vredenburg said. "I'm super proud of the girls."

Abbie Lyman scored seven minutes into the game on Tierra Lambert's assist, and the duo repeated the connection late in the second half to push Coeur d'Alene's record to 4-0-1 in the league, with only a makeup game against Lewiston remaining.

In between Lyman's goals, hard work from the Viking defense and 18 saves by senior goalkeeper Autumn Lambert kept the visiting Timberwolves (5-3 overall, 2-2 5A IEL) off the scoreboard.

"That early goal definitely gave us some confidence," Vredenburg said. "Lake City is always a tough match, and getting that early lead gave us the confidence to finish the match out."

Hailey Jo Parks had eight saves for Lake City, which hosts Post Falls on Thursday.

Vredenburg said the Vikings' makeup game at Lewiston remains to be scheduled, so their next match is Sept. 29 against visiting Sandpoint.

“Our defenders have worked so hard the last two games,” said St. Maries coach Amber Morris, whose team opened the season with a 7-1 loss at Timberlake on Saturday. “Our midfield stepped up and made this success happen. The girls worked amazingly as a team.”

Macie Rimel and Maddie Johnson scored goals for St. Maries (1-1, 1-1 IML), which is scheduled to play at Lakeland on Saturday.

Lake City 3

Coeur d’Alene 1

COEUR d’ALENE — Bryce Allred scored twice and assisted on another goal for the Timberwolves in an Inland Empire League win over the Vikings at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex at Lake City High.

It was the first match for both programs since Sept. 11 due to smoke in the area wiping out the prep soccer schedule Sept. 15-19.

“After a week of scrambling around to find indoor practice facilities due to the air quality levels, it was nice to get back on the pitch and playing outside again,” Lake City coach Alan Rich said. “I’m pleased with the maturity and composure we were able to bring tonight. We defended well, controlled the midfield and attacked when the opportunities presented themselves. The game was back and forth and because it’s a rivalry game, it’s always emotional and hard fought. We trained all week in order to keep our share of the possession and were able to come out on top against a team that never gives up.”

Tyler Allred had 10 saves for Lake City (5-1-1, 2-1-1 5A IEL), which travels to Post Falls on Thursday.

Alex Reyes scored for Coeur d’Alene (4-1-2, 2-1-2), which travels to Sandpoint next Tuesday.
