Barrel race series at fairgrounds wraps up Friday

COEUR d'ALENE — Entries for Friday's Gem State Stampede 5D Barrel Race Series at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds are due by today at 5 p.m. to be in the pre-draw. Riders can still enter the day of prior to 6 p.m.

Friday's barrel races are the last of the season at the fairgrounds.

All proceeds from the Gem State Stampede Barrel Series goes to improvements to the Kootenai County Fairgrounds rodeo arena each year. This year thanks to participation in these races, the Gem State Stampede Rodeo Committee has finished replacing all stock pens, creating a safer environment for our livestock at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.

These races are produced by 100% volunteer effort and have been since the series started in 2016.

Smith named Director of Baseball Operations for Coeur d'Alene Legion baseball program

COEUR d'ALENE — The Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen Baseball Club announced the hiring of Jeffrey Smith as the Director of Baseball Operations for the club.

“I am very excited to get back into the position of helping a local program get to the next level of success,” Smith said in a news release. “We have a great group of players, parents and sponsors in our community and want them to compete and be proud to represent the city and local schools where they live. My main goal is to ensure that they have all the assets that they need to be able to go out and play great baseball.”

Smith has been involved in Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen baseball the past several seasons coaching the 13U and 14U teams and was president for Coeur d'Alene Little League for three years, including 2018 when their group of 12U players and coaches won the Northwest Region and advanced to the Little League World Series in Williamsport Pa.

"Jeff has all the characteristics and experience we were looking for in our new Director of Baseball Operations position,” Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen Baseball Club president Mike Thompson said. “He has a passion for the game and tireless desire to provide our baseball players the best experience on and off the field. Jeff is an excellent fit to help the program move forward and accomplish our goals."

This hiring is to assist in streamlining the various responsibilities that need to be managed for the more than 80 players across five divisions to field and compete at a competitive level for the upcoming 2021 spring and summer seasons.

Smith’s responsibilities will include but are not limited to coordinating the coaching staffs, players, fields and schedules for the club. He will also be representing the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen at American Legion meetings in Idaho and Washington.
