Give peace a chance

COEUR d'ALENE — A celebration aimed at uniting citizens to reflect on a message of peace will be held in Coeur d'Alene throughout this week.

“This year 2020 has been difficult in many ways,” said Jeanette Laster, Human Rights Education Institute executive director. “Members of our community have been isolated due to COVID-19 restrictions and cut off from normal summer social interaction."

She said the pre-election political climate across the nation has also lent itself to intense debate that has been negatively flooding social media outlets.

"In lieu of these adverse interactions, we are looking forward to pausing and reflecting in a manner that will intentionally channel our energy in a positive way," Laster said in a press release.

Events will be held at HREI and at City Park through Friday.

Here's a look at what's ahead:

The second Positive Affirmation Walk in City Park was created for Suicide Prevention Awareness and to let people know that everyone is important and has significance. This leisurely walk can be taken today and Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Lunchtime Peace Sit In discussions at HREI will be held today and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Rethinking Racism Introduction will be held on Friday at HREI from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $30 and includes a light lunch. Reserve your spot at HREI.org

The “Shaping Peace Together” Community Peace Corps Exhibit scheduled for October Coeur d’Alene ArtWalk will host a preview from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at HREI. A few people will share their experiences serving in the PeaceCorps.

The Love Lives Here Coeur d’Alene Campaign will be selling Love Lives Here T-shirts and yard signs at HREI. Proceeds support local business education.

The International Day of Peace is observed around the world each year on Sept. 21. This year’s theme is, "Shaping Peace Together."
