• VOLLEYBALL

COEUR d’ALENE — Lauren Phillips had six of Coeur d’Alene’s 16 aces, and the Vikings went on to sweep the visiting Lake City Timberwolves 25-12, 25-18, 25-14 in 5A Inland Empire League volleyball play Thursday night at Viking Court.

Kate Phillips and Maggie Bloom each added four aces for Coeur d’Alene (5-1, 2-1 5A IEL).

“What I loved tonight was our serving,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “That was probably the best I’ve seen our team serve in a while. We tried to be aggressive, tried to get the other team out of their offense, and I thought we did that tonight.”

Lauren Phillips also had eight kills, 17 assists and eight digs for Coeur d’Alene. Sarah Wilkey had 12 kills and 11 digs, Courtney Garwood 12 assists and eight digs, Emma Fahy two blocks.

Jaya Miller had 11 digs, Nellie Reese 10 assists for Lake City (2-2, 1-2). Hanah Stoddard added four kills.

“It was a gut check for us tonight; we didn’t show up to play,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “And at the end of the day, that begins and ends with me. We lost ball control because we lost all focus on our mission, which was playing as a team. Coeur d’Alene played well; they exploited our weaknesses.”

On Tuesday, Coeur d’Alene plays host to league-leading Post Falls, and Lake City is home vs. Lakeland.

Post Falls d.

Lewiston

LEWISTON — Junior Claire Holding had 17 digs to go with five aces as the visiting Trojans rolled past the Bengals 25-10, 25-20, 25-21 in 5A IEL play.

Maya Blake had eight kills, Brielle Nagel seven for Post Falls (8-0, 3-0 5A IEL). Kylie Munday had 12 assists and two blocks, Kassie Gardiner 11 assists, Kamden Fiddes three blocks.

Lewiston dropped to 0-3 in league.

Post Falls plays at Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.

Lakeland d.

Sandpoint

SANDPOINT — Katy Ryan had 16 kills and seven blocks as the visiting Hawks, the defending 4A Inland Empire League and Region 1 champions, swept the perennial 4A IEL power Bulldogs 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 at Les Rogers Court.

Abbey Neff added 23 assists and five aces for Lakeland (5-4, 2-0 4A IEL). Olivia Cooper had 18 digs, Bethany Johnson seven kills.

“Sandpoint came out with a lot of energy and emotion with it being their senior night,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “Our girls were able to stay level and control the tempo of the game. We still have a couple players out with injury, so I’m very happy how we played as a team tonight. Katy had some huge blocks that stopped the momentum on their side. Abbey had some great serves and set well tonight. Olivia dug some strong hits and kept the ball alive.”

Lakeland travels to Lake City on Tuesday.

Cd’A Charter d.

Timberlake

COEUR d’ALENE — The balance of power in Intermountain League play between the Tigers and Panthers had been on the side of the school from Spirit Lake since Charter joined the league in 2016.

Thursday, Coeur d’Alene Charter moved it a touch in its direction.

Maddie Kociela had 17 kills, Quincy Riggs 34 assists for the Panthers in a 25-18, 25-27, 26-24, 24-26, 15-11 win over the Tigers at Holy Family Catholic School, the program’s first win over Timberlake in program history dating back to 2002.

“My first year (in 2017), for some reason we took a set from them, but haven’t won much against them,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Cynthia Beyer said. “It was nice to take a match from them. The girls played with a lot of energy, and the score was close all the way through. Neither team was quitting and both teams fought until the last point, and that was fun to see. That’s what volleyball is supposed to be and nice to see.”

Rylee Peterson had 15 kills, Jaclyn Paterson two blocks, Reana Kendra two blocks and Emma Averill five aces for Coeur d’Alene Charter (4-1, 2-0 IML), which is scheduled to face Kellogg on Tuesday at Holy Family.

Brooke Jessen had 23 kills and 38 digs, Samantha Wilfong 35 assists and Lindley Howard two blocks for Timberlake (0-3, 0-1), which travels to Priest River on Tuesday.

Priest River d.

Genesis Prep

PRIEST RIVER — Katie Plummer had 18 digs and three aces for the visiting Jaguars, who fell 25-8, 25-23, 25-14 to the Spartans in nonleague play.

Meadow Royalty added five assists, three kills and three digs for Genesis Prep (0-2). Shayla Hill had four digs and two aces, Sophie Martin five digs, Camryn Duff five digs.

“The girls played much better tonight than in our opener against Wallace,” Genesis Prep coach Paula Thurston said. “We were scrappy and had some great rallies, Priest River was just able to finish it. Our passing was great, and even though our serving started off slow we came back strong toward the end. The girls have worked hard this past week after a tough first game and you could really tell a difference.”

Genesis Prep is scheduled to play host to North Idaho Christian on Tuesday at The Courts at Real Life Ministries.

Lakeside d.

Kootenai

PLUMMER — Arianna Havier-Gorr had seven kills for the Knights, who finished with 22 aces as a team in a 25-11, 25-2, 25-17 win over the Warriors at Ron Miller Court.

Martina Rivera had two blocks, Kria Peters 15 assists and Chantell Luke nine aces for Lakeside (1-1), which had not played since Aug. 27 due to being quarantined due to COVID-19.

“The girls were happy to be back,” Lakeside coach Brad Veile said. “They all said it was a long two weeks. Due to the quarantine, we lost two weeks of conditioning and had the smoke issue as well and only had two practices before the match. But the girls were happy to be back and playing again.”

Lakeside faces North Idaho Christian at Holy Family Catholic School in Coeur d’Alene on Saturday.

Sara Thaut had 16 digs and two kills, Abby Tiller five digs, 13 assists and one block, Kayleigh Dorman seven kills, six digs and one assist and Kiera Bohanan three digs for Kootenai (0-3), which travels to Clark Fork on Tuesday.
