Constitution Week Spotlight 0918

“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

These words, written 233 years ago, are the Preamble to our Constitution and outline the purpose of the constitution and the federal government. Our Founding Fathers based the new democratic republic on three principles: inherent rights, self-government and separation of powers within the branches of government.

Did you know? Two Founding Fathers and future Presidents did not sign the Constitution. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were both out of the country serving as ambassadors.
