COEUR d’ALENE — Lake City racked up 50 points and nearly 500 passing yards on Lewiston on Friday night, in a nonleague game between 5A Inland Empire League foes.

But the Timberwolves could not stop the visiting Bengals on the ground, and Lewiston escaped with a wild 58-50 victory.

“It was a tale of two offenses,” Lake City coach Brian Fulp said. “We gained most of ours through the air, and they gained most of theirs on the ground.”

Chris Irvin completed 29 of 48 passes for 489 yards and six touchdowns for Lake City (1-1), and his quarterback sneak with 2 ½ minutes left tied the game at 50.

Lewiston (2-0) responded with a go-ahead TD run by Cruz Hepburn with 33 seconds left. The T-Wolves drove to the Bengal 35 before running out of time.

Matthew Whitcomb caught eight passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns for Lake City. Zach Johnson also caught two TD passes, and Damon Rosenau and Uriah Chavez caught one TD pass each.

Quarterback Kash Lang ran for five touchdowns for Lewiston, which led 36-22 at halftime.

Lake City plays at Sandpoint (0-2) next Friday.
