LEWISTON — It took a set to get going, but Lake City made a winner of Michelle Kleinberg in her debut as Timberwolves’ head coach.

Junior Hanah Stoddard had 12 kills and 15 digs as Lake City defeated the Lewiston Bengals 19-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-15 in Inland Empire League play Thursday in Lewiston’s new gymnasium.

Nellie Reese added 28 assists, seven kills and three aces for the Timberwolves. Brenna Hawkins had eight kills, Jaya Miller 18 digs, Ella Hosfeld 12 digs, Tanai Jenkins and Alissa Stennett two blocks each.

“I think we found our rhythm in the second set; part of it was getting the jitters out,” said Kleinberg, a Timberwolf assistant last season. “We dialed in our serve-receive passing, and made Nellie’s job easier.”

Lewiston is 2-2, 0-2 IEL.

Lake City plays host to Sandpoint on Tuesday.

Lakeland

COEUR d’ALENE — Sarah Wilkey had 12 kills, seven digs and two blocks for the Vikings in a 25-10, 25-16, 25-19 win over the Hawks at Viking Court.

“Sarah did a great job tonight,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “She was very solid in the back row and played a smart game up front. She’s a good all-around player and was fun to watch tonight.”

Angela Goggin had 15 kills and three blocks, Lauren Phillips 18 assists, Courtney Garwood 14 assists, Maggie Bloom five digs and Madi Symons three aces for Coeur d’Alene (2-1, 2-1 IEL), which travels to Sandpoint on Thursday.

“Lakeland has some good hitters that were shining tonight,” Curtis said. “But we had some good ball control tonight and run our offense effectively. Our ball control was really the key for us tonight.”

For Lakeland (2-2, 1-1), Katy Ryan had 14 kills, two blocks and two aces, Abbey Neff 17 assists, Olivia Cooper 14 digs, Ellie Carlson 10 digs, Bethany Johnson two blocks.

“We didn’t show up to compete tonight,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “We came out flat with no energy. Coeur d’Alene served hard and our passers struggled. Coeur d’Alene was scrappy and picked up a lot of our hits.”

Lakeland competes in a tri-match with Post Falls and Timberlake on Tuesday at The Arena in Post Falls.

Cam Merril had three assists for Lake City (4-1, 4-0 IEL).

“We got a lot of minutes from some of our younger players on the field and those that haven’t had a lot of minutes with our varsity group,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “It was a good game for us. Lakeland and their coaching staff worked hard. They were outmatched, but you wouldn’t know that by their demeanor. I was impressed with how they approached the game and it was great to see.”

Sandpoint 1

SANDPOINT — Ellie Morrisroe’s first goal was something that Viking coach Andy Vredenburg described as a great goal.

Her second one might have been a little better.

Morrisroe scored on a header in the 60th minute on a cross from Abbie Lyman to send the Vikings past the Bulldogs in an Inland Empire League match at War Memorial Field.

“On her first goal, Ellie was out on the left wing and beat her defender and goalkeeper on the left post,” Vredenburg said. “The second goal, Abbie sent a cross to Ellie and she headed it in.”

Autumn Lambert had seven saves for Coeur d’Alene (3-0-2, 3-0-1 IEL), which is scheduled to visit Lake City on Wednesday.

“It was a really good match,” Vredenburg said. “Sandpoint is always one of the top teams in North Idaho. The first half was back and forth, but we just found a way. We knew it was going to be a tough match, but the girls played really, really well.”

Sandpoint (2-2, 1-2) hosts Lakeland next Wednesday.

POST FALLS — Three days after nearly picking off a 5A school, the 3A Panthers finished the job.

Sarah Hines scored a hat trick as Coeur d’Alene Charter, the four-time defending state champions, beat the 5A Trojans at Post Falls High.

Kiley Cutler had a goal and an assist for Coeur d’Alene Charter (3-0-1), which gave up a late goal and settled for a 3-3 tie at Coeur d’Alene on Monday.

“Overall, I’m very pleased with the result,” Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “Anytime we can control a majority of the game, especially against a larger program, it feels pretty good. We had to get creative on the offensive end. Post Falls has some talent and they utilize it to defend quite a bit. Once we moved more, we were able to find each other and take advantage of some of our opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Kellogg has canceled its girls soccer season due to lack of numbers, so Charter’s next scheduled game is next Thursday at Priest River.

Post Falls (1-4) travels to Lewiston on Wednesday.

First half — 1, Charter, Isabella Lucky (Kiley Cutler), 11:00. 2, Charter, Sarah Hines (Rebekah Hines), 13:00. 3, PF, Morgan Rust (unassisted), 17:00. Second half — 4, Charter, S. Hines (Ava Shivers), 44:00. 5, Charter, Cutler (unassisted), 45:00. 6, Charter, S. Hines (unassisted), 79:00.
