SPIRIT LAKE — A woman is in jail after she allegedly attacked a man with a metal rod.

Summer D. Welch, 30, is charged with aggravated battery, a felony.

Police responded Oct. 27 to a report of a possible domestic dispute at a Spirit Lake residence.

When they arrived at the scene, police reportedly found a woman, identified as Welch, attempting to smash a window with a plastic milk crate. Blood dripped from both of her hands, according to court documents.

Police commanded Welch at gunpoint to drop the crate and move to the sidewalk. She did not comply right away, court documents said, and after she did, she allegedly did not comply with orders to get on the ground. Police took Welch to the ground and detained her, according to court documents.

Welch reportedly told police she had been locked out of the residence and was trying to get back inside. She said the man who locked her out may have left the location.

She did not say how she got blood on her hands, though she reportedly had a cut on her finger.

The man who reportedly locked Welch out of the house contacted police upon his return.

He told police he and Welch had been drinking together earlier in the day. He said he was asleep in a recliner when Welch attacked him, hitting him in the face and neck with her fists.

Welch then reportedly left the room and the man attempted to go back to sleep. However, Welch allegedly returned to the room and hit the man in the face with a metal rod with a claw on the end used to retrieve objects, which broke into pieces upon impact.

The man said he attempted to kick Welch to get her away from him. She continued to attack him but eventually returned to her bedroom, police records state. The man said he left the residence after the altercation.

He had visible cuts on his hands, police said, as well as cuts and abrasions on his face. There was dried blood on his face, hands and clothes, according to court documents.

Broken pieces of the metal rod were found in the residence.

Police arrested Welch and charged her with aggravated battery.

A judge ordered that she be held on $10,000 bail and issued a no-contact order between Welch and the man.
