Apsey steps down as

Boise State athletic director

BOISE — Boise State athletic director Curt Apsey announced Wednesday that he is leaving his role as athletic director to move into a university-level fundraising position.

Bob Carney, the Broncos’ senior associate athletic director for strategic planning and capital projects, will serve as interim director of athletics until a permanent hire is made.

A national search for a permanent director of athletics will begin immediately.

Apsey initially joined Boise State in 1998 as senior associate athletic director, working with both corporate and individual donors to make long-lasting improvements to Boise State athletics and athletics facilities. He headed the "Initiative for Athletic Excellence" capital campaign to improve and expand athletic facilities that included the Caven-Williams Indoor Sports Complex ($10 million, 2006), the Stueckle Sky Center ($37 million, 2008), the Arguinchona Basketball Complex ($3 million, 2011) and the Bleymaier Football Center ($22 million, 2013).

He was in his sixth year as the Broncos’ athletic director, and was most recently honored as a finalist for the Sports Business Journal’s Athletic Director of the Year.

Carney initially joined the department in 2005 and served in several capacities before being promoted to his current role in July 2018. An Air Force veteran, Carney earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Boise State in August 2008, and his master's in athletic leadership, also from Boise State, in 2018.

Carney developed bids for hosting postseason competition, ultimately helping to secure the 2018 NCAA Tournament first and second Rounds in Boise and then serving as tournament coordinator for the event.

L-C State to go without spectators for start of basketball season

LEWISTON — To help limit coronavirus exposure for its student-athletes so they can compete, Lewis-Clark State College officials have announced that no fans will be allowed at home games in the L-C State Activity Center to start the 2020-21 men’s and women’s basketball seasons.

LC State has not participated in any athletic competition since March because of COVID-19, which shut down the NAIA national basketball tournament and all spring sports. The NAIA announced earlier this year that its fall sports would be moved to the winter and spring.

L-C State joined the Cascade Collegiate Conference this year, which includes several schools from Washington and Oregon, which have more pandemic restrictions in place. In order for those teams to travel to Lewiston and to protect their student-athletes and give them the best shot at completing the entire basketball seasons, L-C made the decision to go without fans to start the seasons. L-C officials will continue to monitor the local COVID-19 numbers, which have increased in the past few weeks.

All home basketball games this season can be viewed on the L-C State athletics streaming platform. Games airing on the Warrior Sports Network will be available for purchase on a day-by-day or season basis. Individual days (women’s basketball game followed by a men’s basketball game) and season passes can be purchased on the Warrior Sports Network page through Sidearm Sports. A day pass is $9.95, and a season pass is $60. All LC games also will be carried live on the radio on KOZE-AM (950).
