Susan Elizabeth Mitchell

| October 14, 2020 1:00 AM

Susan Elizabeth Mitchell passed away on Oct. 6, 2020 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, from complications of a stroke she suffered two months prior.

Susan was born Dec. 31, 1943, and was raised by her parents, Robert and Elizabeth Schroeder, in Coeur d’Alene, along with her younger brother, David.

Susan graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1962 and continued her education at the University of Idaho, majoring in secondary education. After graduation, Susan returned to Coeur d’Alene and married Joe Dobson, a fellow U of I graduate, in 1965. She began her 20 plus year teaching career at Coeur d‘Alene High School, where she taught economics, government and English. She had two daughters, Mary and Amy.

In 1977, Susan married Jack Mitchell and they relocated to Boise, Idaho, where they combined the two families. While in Boise, Susan began working for an investment brokerage and gained a vast knowledge of the stock market. This experience led to Susan later creating a stock market game for her Econ students.

Susan was passionate about many things, especially golfing, gardening, photography and spending time with family. She played at Hayden Lake Country Club for years with her husband, Jack, and coached the girls golf team at Coeur d’Alene High School for a number of years. She loved her big garden in her backyard and took pride in knowing all the flowers she planted there. She went to many different nurseries around the area, so everyone knew her.

She also was very passionate about photography. She would take photos of the eagles at Higgins Point and would research all the hummingbirds she would take photos of. She went to most of the grandchildren’s sporting events to photograph, and made sure all the players of ALL of those teams received photos and created special collages for the coaches.

There were many holidays that would be hosted at her house or at the country club and she was always filled with joy being around her family. She will be remembered as meticulous and knowledgeable, always wanting to learn more and keep herself busy with crosswords, Sudoku, tole painting and knitting. She will also be remembered for always drinking a cold Diet Coke, loving any kind of pie and cookies, and the stash of Peanut M&Ms in the cupboard.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Irene Schroeder; her son-in-law, Kurt Gomer; her Aunt Scuddie; and her husband, Jack. She is survived by her brother, David (Penny) Schroeder of Spokane, Wash.; daughters Mary Gomer and Amy Murrin of Post Falls; stepsons Jon Mitchell of Cheney, Wash. and Jerry Mitchell of Lewiston, Idaho; foster son, Mike Crisp of Sammamish, Wash.; and grandchildren Nate and Brook Gomer, Sean and Eric Murrin, Quinn and Jack Mitchell and Chris and Nick Mitchell.
