REBUTTAL: Priest defends sermon

| November 4, 2020 1:00 AM

My parish was called out in a recent letter to the editor that objected to my sermon pointing out that the Nazis were socialists and pointing out President Trump’s pro-life record. The letter also said Canon 287 of Church law prohibited clergy from siding with political parties.

In response… if political candidates and parties are going to stray into the Church’s realm by taking a stand on issues of faith and morals, one had better believe that the Church has every right to weigh in on it.

Nazi stands for Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, or National SOCIALIST German Workers’ Party.

President Trump IS the most pro-life president we have had. The cages for Hispanic immigrants (referenced by the letter to contest that) were built during the Obama administration.

If Vatican norms for politicians were applied to Biden, on the other hand, due to “consistently campaigning and voting for permissive abortion laws” (Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion: General Principles, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, July 2004), he should be denied receiving Holy Communion. How will one answer to God for voting in politicians who fail to defend human life in the womb (natural law), just because one liked the politicians’ other policies?

Canon 287 says clergy should not play an active role in political parties (party leadership) unless this is required for the common good.

We need to pray that an understanding of the natural law return to our country!

P.S.: I do pay my taxes!
