Fans invited to choose red turf

design at EWU’s Roos Field

CHENEY — The replacement of the red turf at Roos Field is underway, and Eastern Washington University football fans are invited to pick from four potential designs of the field as a fundraiser for the Eagle Athletic Fund.

Fans can go to ewu.edu/give/funds/stadium/turfvote/ to donate and receive the opportunity to vote. So far, $4,275 has been raised in support of student-athlete scholarships at EWU, with a goal of $20,000.

The deadline is noon Pacific time on Wednesday.

AstroTurf received the bid to replace the iconic red field, initially installed in the summer of 2010. Workers have already begun removing the rubber “crumb” used to cushion the field, with the actual tear-up of the field commencing later this month. The new turf will be installed this summer.

The nearly $1 million project is part of a $5 million pledge provided by local businessman Jack Gillingham toward the Roos Field Renovation Project. Gillingham’s gift was announced on Sept. 19, 2019.
