Daniel James Hagen, 97

Daniel James Hagen passed away at Schneidmiller Hospice House on May 11, 2020. Dan was born in Missoula, Mont. on May 23, 1922, to Joseph and Marie Hagen. He attended Catholic schools in Missoula, from kindergarten through eighth grade, and graduated from Missoula County High School in 1940.

Dan was an award-winning draftsman at his high school and qualified for advanced placement mathematics at Notre Dame. Dan attended Notre Dame as an aeronautical engineering major until he volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as a maintenance officer for the duration of World War II.

Dan married Charlotte A. Kelly, of St. Paul, Minn., in 1949. Dan and Charlotte raised four children: James Patrick Hagen, Mary Patricia Hagen, Charlotte Ann Hagen and Kathleen “Katie” Hagen. Dan is survived by Jim, Charlotte and Katie. He was preceded in death by his wife and his daughter, Mary.

Dan was the proprietor of Vogue Cleaners in downtown Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, from 1952 to 1977. Subsequently, Dan worked for Idaho Veneer, drove a school bus for Coeur d’Alene School District 271 and volunteered as a driver for Kootenai Hospital patients.

Dan was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic parish in Coeur d’Alene. He enjoyed assembling and flying radio-controlled model airplanes, listening to classical music, shooting firearms, drafting, carpentry, elk hunting pack trips, downhill skiing, building speed boats during his high school era, and in more recent years, his cats.

A vigil will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2020, with Rosary at 3 p.m., at English Funeral Chapel, 1133 N. Fourth St, Coeur d’Alene.

A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 919 Indiana Ave., Coeur d’Alene. Directly following the Mass, Dan will be laid to rest at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.
