RATHDRUM — Erika Gallus had two hits and drove in three runs in the nightcap for Lakeland, which lost the second game of doubleheader to darkness — and the Lewiston Bengals — 10-7 in the season opener for both teams at Lakeland High on Thursday.

Lewiston won the first game 24-0.

“We made some adjustments, and the second game went much better,” Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. “The second game we came out ready to hit the ball; the first game we were a little timid in the box.”

Mikayla Olson and Haylee Smit had two RBIs each in the second game for Lakeland, which is scheduled to host Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.

Taryn Barney homered three times on the day for Lewiston, including a grand slam in the first game. Samantha Mader struck out 10 and pitched a one-hitter for the Bengals in the opener.

• CORONAVIRUS

Local high school teams are continuing with their spring sports seasons as normal, various school officials said.

“Everything from here on out is outdoors, and that makes a difference with coronavirus,” said Scott Maben, spokesperson for the Coeur d’Alene School District.

He did caution that the situation was fluid, and that the school district’s stance could change if circumstances change.

The Buck’s Bags Spring Classic baseball tournament in Boise area in late March, and the Win The Pitch softball tournament in the Boise area in late March, were both canceled. A handful of local teams were entered in those tourneys.

Saturday’s state high school boys and girls basketball all-star games, hosted by North Idaho College, were canceled.
