DST: Split the difference

| March 11, 2020 1:00 AM

I have followed the debate that erupts twice per year about daylight saving time, and appreciate both sides of the issue. Some say having year-round daylight saving time causes it to be too dark (and unsafe) on winter mornings, especially for children waiting for the school bus. Others say that keeping it standard time year-round causes us to “lose” daylight, lose evening outdoor recreation time, and increases energy costs.

Evidence suggests that the semi-annual time change is not good for our health. It disrupts our body clocks or circadian rhythm, and is costly for business.

My solution would be to split the difference and move the entire nation ahead by 30 minutes. There are a number of areas in the world that are 30 minutes “off” from Greenwich mean time including Newfoundland, parts of Australia and Afghanistan. The reason these areas do this is because it works best for them.

Why can’t America, the greatest country in the world, do what is best for the country? Let’s stop the madness and set our clocks once and for all.
