Coeur d’Alene baseball beats raindrops, Moscow

COEUR d’ALENE — A few drops of rain mixed with a few flakes of snow didn’t stop Coeur d’Alene from hosting an early-March baseball game on Monday afternoon.

The Vikings scored three first-inning runs and held off the Bears with strong pitching for a 4-1 season-opening victory.

“Our pitching set the table for us. All four of our pitchers threw well,” CHS coach Erik Karns said. “It was just great to get out there and see some good things, along with plenty of things to work on. This sets us up for a good week of practice.”

Moscow scored an unearned run in the top of the first, then the Vikings went to work. Alex Karns drew a one-out walk, Devon Johnson had a single, and an RBI single from Jake Brown scored Karns to even the score. Landon Thompson followed with a sacrifice fly to put Coeur d’Alene ahead for good.

Bode Bailey added an RBI double in the second for the Vikings, while pitchers Alex Karns, Wade Mallory, Liam Paddack and Ryan Schneider combined to allow only one hit while striking out 10 Moscow hitters.

Coeur d’Alene returns to action on Friday, traveling to the Tri-Cities for a doubleheader with Kamiakin High School.
