ADVERTISING: Advertorial — DR. WAYNE M. FICHTER: Effects of low-level laser therapy for autism

It is exciting to see options available for autistic spectrum disorder in children and adolescents. One of these options is low-level laser therapy that has been found to be an effective tool for some symptoms associated with autism. A study from the Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Havana, Cuba called “The Effects of Low-Level Laser Therapy in Autism Spectrum Disorder” and published in Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, shows real promise for children suffering from autism because it examined the effectiveness of low-level laser therapy for the treatment of irritability symptoms associated with autistic spectrum disorder in children and adolescents aged 5-17. The study reported that low-level laser therapy or cold laser therapy can be an effective tool for reducing irritability and other symptoms and behaviors associated with the autistic spectrum disorder in children and adolescents. Prior to clinical trial, FDA approval and input were obtained and the study used the 640nm Erchonia Laser to treat autistic children.

“This is a well-designed trial that shows evidence supporting the use of low-level laser therapy in children and adolescents with autism,” said Dr. Morales-Quezada, associate research director at Spaulding-Labuschagne Neuromodulation Center.

“Moreover, the technique proved to be safe and well tolerated by the study participants. The active intervention showed to be more effective than the placebo (sham) device in treating symptoms of autistic disorder, and this statistically significant treatment effect was observed for all clinical outcomes, by the end of the intervention period and after the 6 months follow-up. This evidence offers a new treatment option to be considered for children and adolescents with autism.”

Dr. Calixto Machado, president of the Cuban Society of the Clinical Neurophysiology Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery agreed. “Results are so strong, nobody can argue them.”

The most obvious physiological reaction seems to be that light emitted from the cold laser creates a photochemical reaction within cells that supports mitochondrial function. The mitochondria are responsible for producing energy that our bodies need to function and by stimulating these cells, gives them more energy to function and repair. Mitochondria are essential for optimal brain and mental health. We are witnessing tremendous results without the use of drugs. And physiological changes happen at a rapid pace when using LLLT.

The human body is made up of over 70 trillion cells. Each one of these cells needs information and energy to thrive and they all need to communicate with each other. The cold laser helps damaged cells heal, thus accomplishing that more efficiently. When broken, faulty, or undeveloped, these systems are energized with cold laser therapy and the body, brain and nervous system responds positively. We must stop looking at the body as individual parts and start looking at it from a holistic perspective in which everything is interconnected.
