When I read Craig Northrup’s article in The Press, I asked myself, is Steve Matheson the only county official to recognize he works for all citizens of Kootenai County and not just the city of Coeur d’Alene? Like The Man said, “It’s not the principle but the principle of the thing.”
We elect county commissioners to make tough decisions. When county commissioners urge supporting urban redevelopment projects in Coeur d’Alene or other cities with the county taxing authority funds, however worthy those projects may be, where does it end?
There are any number of URDs in the state and they are not all in Coeur d’Alene. If a commissioner wants to support URD projects in the city of Coeur d’Alene or any other community, as an individual, feel free to do so. Just don’t do it on the backs of others who may not share your view. Resign your commission and seek employment elsewhere.
What is the next worthy URD project for Kootenai County residents? Coeur d’Alene, Athol or Spirit Lake? City parking garage? Protective fencing in Athol for the release center?
Don’t fault Steve Matheson for doing his job and I won’t fault you for not doing yours. You seem to be the only one divided here. Why do you think the state calls it urban development funding?
