PD: Earning citizens’ respect

| June 26, 2020 1:00 AM

Dear Chief White,

With the chaos and disruption in so many cities across our nation, we want to take a moment to thank you, and all of our Coeur d’Alene police officers, for the tremendous job you are doing. Our community is fortunate to have your steady, firm leadership and mindful understanding of our local culture.

The recent protest gatherings downtown are a great example of this respect. The combination of protesters and armed citizens could have been disastrous, but it was not, in large part due to the tone of cooperation set by your team. Coeur d’Alene Police, along with other law enforcement partners, were at the ready but not center stage, which allowed community interactions to find their own balance. And it worked. It was an outstanding example for other cities and states.

So now, with news of police departments in other states facing disrespect and defunding, we want you all to know we are grateful for your service to Coeur d’Alene. Your jobs are stressful and dangerous, dealing with situations most citizens will never realize. That dedication is deeply appreciated. Your leadership, Chief, sets the bar and you have done an excellent job.

Many thanks from your District 4 state legislators,

SEN. MARY SOUZA

REP. PAUL AMADOR

REP. JIM ADDIS
