LEGION BASEBALL: Northern Lakes claims sweep with walkoff

| June 25, 2020 1:12 AM

RATHDRUM — Jack McDonald hit a two-run single to left field to put Northern Lakes ahead for good in a 5-4 win over the North Idaho Lakers in the first game of a Single-A Legion baseball doubleheader on Wednesay at Gorton Field at Lakeland High.

In the nightcap, Northern Lakes scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, capped by a walkoff single by Jaret Taylor to score Sam Pemberton to win 12-11 for the sweep.

“It was definitely an exciting day,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. “A little nervewracking, but we’re kind of becoming the cardic kids.”

Trailing 4-3 in one out in the bottom of the sixth, McDonald scored Jacob Shaffner and Sam Pemberton to take the lead in the first game.

Scott Pote pitched a scoreless seventh to get the win for Northern Lakes (6-1), which travels to Camas-Prairie (Grangeville) for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. on Friday.

“Offensively, it took us a little bit to get going,” Johnson said. “But Jack had a great performance, and so did Scott. We got hits when we needed them and Scott did a good job of throwing strikes and making them put the ball in play.”

Louis Powell had three RBIs in the second game for Northern Lakes.
