LEGION BASEBALL: Lums post soggy sweep of Cannons

| June 21, 2020 1:06 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Jackson Scherr hit a three-run double in a nine-run fourth inning and finished with four RBIs, and the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen rallied to beat the Spokane Cannons 18U 10-5 in the first game of a nonleague doubleheader at Thorco Field.

In the second game, Troy Shepard, Scherr and Alex Karns teamed on a one-hitter with 17 strikeouts as the Lums won 8-2 for the sweep.

“Jackson had a great game; he saw the ball extremely well all night,” Coeur d’Alene assistant coach Paul Manzardo said. “He hit everything hard. Even his outs were hard.”

In the rainy opener, with the Lums down 5-1, Liam Paddack started the comeback in the fourth with an RBI double. Marcus Manzardo added a two-run single to pull Coeur d’Alene within a run. Scherr’s bases-clearing double made it 9-5.

In the second game, Shepard struck out six in three hitless innings, Scherr fanned six in 2 1/3 innings, and Karns recorded all five of his outs by strikeout.

Landen Thompson hit an RBI double in the first inning, and led off the sixth with a homer to hike the Lums’ lead to 4-2. Breyson Coppess added a two-run single in the five-run inning.

“We just had a bunch of big hits throughout both games,” Manzardo said.

Coeur d’Alene plays the Prairie Cardinals on Monday in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Post Falls High in the class AA North Idaho League opener for the only two teams in the league this year.
