LEGION BASEBALL: Lums complete Bozeman trip with win, loss

| June 14, 2020 1:02 AM

BOZEMAN, Mont. — The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen class AA team scored 13 runs in its final four at-bats to rally past the Yakima Beetles 17-10 in the first of its two games on Saturday at Heroes Park.

In the second game, Coeur d’Alene fell 18-1 in four innings to the Missoula Mavericks.

The Lums (2-7) went 2-3 over the five-game, three-day stretch in Bozeman.

“We’re battling through some inconsistencies with our pitching,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “But our bats are picking up — we’ve focused on not striking out, and putting the ball in play with less than two outs and runners on.”

Quinn Conces, moved up to the leadoff spot from the No. 9 position due to an illness to the usual leadoff hitter, went 3 for 3 with five RBIs and three runs scored for Coeur d’Alene against Yakima. He hit an RBI triple in the fourth, an RBI single in the fifth to tie the game at 9, a two-run double in the sixth and a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

“Quinn had a fantastic series of games,” Karns said. “He just hit lights-out, and did a lot of things to get us going. Plus, he’s our fastest kid.”

Payton Childers went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs for the Lums, Marcus Manzardo knocked in three runs, Breyson Coppess two.

Coeur d’Alene trailed 9-4 after three innings. Liam Paddack came on in relief and got the win, pitching 4 1/3 innings, scattering four hits, striking out three and allowing just one (unearned) run.

“Liam, for the last three outings, has really settled in and become consistent,” Karns said of the left-hander. “When he stays within himself, he does a great job keeping hitters off balance.”

Coeur d’Alene is scheduled to play host to the Prairie Cardinals on Monday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Thorco Field. It’s the first of two doubleheaders in as many Mondays between the only two teams playing this year in the class AA North Idaho League. Both teams will advance to state later this summer; the results of these four games will determine their seeding.
