Shirley Ann Hadley Ely, 88
Shirley Ann Hadley Ely of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, was born on June 19, 1931, in Eugene, Ore., to Clausen and Martha Hadley. On June 5, 2020, at the age of 88, Shirley passed on to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She received a degree from Stanford University at 20 years old as one of the youngest women to be accepted into the university. Shirley majored in education and went on to be a grade-school teacher for 36 years in San Jose, Calif.
After raising three sons and one daughter to be great adults, she continued to be deeply involved in the lives of her nine grandkids as both loving grandmother and teacher. Shirley was also intimately involved in the BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) program for many years as a member and leader. One of her passions in life was volunteer work — which she did for children’s tutoring programs, Kootenai Health, the public library and local classrooms where she was known for years as “The Story Lady.” Shirley enjoyed camping, traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends in discussion or playing board games.
Shirley is survived by her children, Craig (Christine) Ely, Marc (Sue) Ely, Bret (Judy) Ely and Martha (Ron) Honda; her nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
There will be a private family service to celebrate Shirley’s life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Shirley’s name to the Children’s Village, 1350 W. Hanley Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83815, or 208-667-1189.
