WCC to modify

women’s basketball schedule

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — The start date of the women’s basketball conference regular-season schedule for the 2020-21 season will move up three days to begin Dec. 28, and the 2020-21 regular-season schedule format will be modified to utilize travel partners to minimize travel, the West Coast Conference Executive Council and Presidents’ Council determined this week.

The WCC said, at this time, it plans to hold all of its conference championship events for the 2020-21 season as scheduled.

The conference is planning to move the 2021 men’s and women’s basketball media tipoff events, originally scheduled to be held in Las Vegas, to a virtual event.

Big Sky announces tweaked

2020 volleyball schedule

FARMINGTON, Utah — The Big Sky Conference on Friday announced the 2020 volleyball conference schedule featuring a 16-game slate, two games less than last year’s 18-game schedules.

In addition to two less games, each Big Sky team will play eight different opponents in back-to-back games. The Vandals will play four opponents at home and four on the road over an eight-week span from Sept. 24 to Nov. 20. The games each week will take place on back-to-back days against the same opponent on either Thursday and Friday, or Friday and Saturday depending on the home football schedule that day.

The Vandals will face Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, Montana State, and Northern Colorado at home, and travel to Idaho State, Sacramento State, Montana and Eastern Washington. Idaho will open conference play against Southern Utah in Memorial Gym on Friday, Oct. 2 and will face the Thunderbirds again the following day. The 2020 regular season concludes in Moscow on Thursday, Nov. 19 and Friday, Nov. 20 against defending champion Northern Colorado.

Idaho is not scheduled to face Weber State and Portland State in conference play.

The postseason tournament will look different this year for the Big Sky as only the top four teams will advance. The tournament will be held on Nov. 24-25 in Greeley, Colo., hosted by the University of Northern Colorado.

league cancels 2020 season

This week the West Coast League’s board of directors voted to cancel its 2020 summer collegiate baseball season, due to pandemic-related safety guidelines and travel restrictions across Washington and Oregon.

Concurrently, league members Cowlitz, Port Angeles, Ridgefield, Walla Walla, and Yakima Valley are canceling their respective seasons.

The WCL’s Portland Pickles and Wenatchee AppleSox still hope to play this summer, independently.

Also this week, the league set June 4 as the opening day for its 2021 season. Among those beginning league play on that date will be an expansion team based in Nanaimo, British Columbia.
