It’s a song that makes any American’s eyes glisten with pride.
When “God Bless America” is sung with the velvety voice of Bridgette Lewis, harmonized by dad Mike Lewis and fittingly performed on Independence Day aboard a cruise boat named the “American Song” with military veterans in attendance, the overwhelming sense of patriotism makes an American heart feel even more red, white and blue.
"It means everything to us,” Bridgette said Wednesday. "Just seeing the way it can impact people, that makes it so worthwhile."
The Hayden father-daughter duo, who comprise the music group One Street Over, released on Sunday a music video of a live performance filmed July 4, 2019, on an American Cruise Line boat on the Columbia River. Filmed by One Street Over Trio member Jordan Lewis, who is Michael's son and Bridgette's brother, the video showcases heartfelt vocals interwoven with images of Old Glory.
"We’ve played a lot of shows on those ships through the years," Michael said. "The backdrop behind when we do that tribute to America, there were some pretty powerful experiences from having veterans in the audience. Our veterans would stand up and we’d have everybody give them applause.
"It was almost always fighting back tears at some point," he said.
The goal was to have the video ready by the Fourth of July 2020, but a recording project delayed the completion of the video so its release didn't land on America's birthday, but it still happened in the month of July.
One Street Over plays a variety of pop, R&B, jazz and blues, including covers and originals. Although this family act has had to take off time from live performances during the pandemic lockdown, it's kept busy in the recording studio and is now back out entertaining fans around the Northwest.
"We just started doing live shows again two weeks ago," Michael said. "We did one streaming show, but then our first live shows back were at the Coeur d'Alene Casino."
The One Street Over Trio will return to the Pend d'Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., Sandpoint from 5 to 8 tonight. The One Street Over Power Duo will play the Coeur d'Alene Casino for two shows July 31 and Aug. 1 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Nighthawk Lounge.
