Angler nets reward fish

| July 16, 2020 1:00 AM

A Priest River angler won $1,000 after catching a walleye in the Priest River that was tagged as part of Idaho Fish and Game’s angler incentive program.

Leon Russell caught his winning fish in early July in the lower Priest River.

The reward fish was tagged last February near Fisherman’s Island in Lake Pend Oreille. The 21-inch walleye traveled over 27 miles across the lake and down the Pend Oreille River to the lower reaches of Priest River.

Russell’s walleye is the fourth $1,000 walleye caught in the program. In May, three Idaho anglers also turned in reward tags.

Up to 96 $1,000 tagged walleye are still available in the Pend Oreille system, according to Idaho Fish and Game. Anglers who submit walleye heads are entered into monthly drawings for $100 prizes.

Rules can be found on the Idaho Fish and Game website.
