FIRES: Tragedy or tipping point?

| January 29, 2020 12:00 AM

Scorched earth, destroyed homes, burned animals and shocked residents have been all over the news and my heart really goes out to the people of Australia. I also know that increased risk of forest fires is one of the biggest threats to our area from climate change and I do not want our beautiful area to look like what I see coming out of Australia.

There is a solution to climate change that does not rely on government regulation but is business-friendly and relies on innovation to limit the effects of climate change. House Resolution (HR) 763 Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act is a bill currently before U.S. Congress and has 75 cosponsors and bipartisan support. An October 2019 study performed by Columbia University found that HR 763 would result in economy-wide net Green House Gas (GHG) emissions to decline significantly and cause electricity generation to shift to cleaner sources.

Please don’t let the Australian fires be just a tragedy, but make them the tipping point that gets you involved with real solutions to climate change. Please visit the Citizens’ Climate Lobby Website (citizensclimatelobby.org) and learn more about HR 763. If you want to see GHG emissions decline significantly and cleaner electricity generation nationwide, please let our Congressman Russ Fulcher know you support HR 763 by calling his office at 208-667-0127.
