COEUR d’ALENE — Senior point guard Ben Zubaly hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points as the Lakeland Hawks beat the Coeur d’Alene Vikings 65-47 in nonleague high school boys basketball play Tuesday night at Jordan Court.

Carson Seay added 15 points, Ammon Munyer 12 for Lakeland (13-1), which beat Coeur d’Alene 61-55 at home in the season opener.

“They’ve got size, and they’ve got guys that can shoot it,” Coeur d’Alene coach Tony Hanna said. “And once they get a lead, and you go out and pressure them, they get backdoor cuts on you.”

Devon Johnson scored 13 points for Coeur d’Alene (5-8), which has lost four straight.

“We just didn’t do anything well,” Hanna said. “We didn’t defend, we didn’t function offensively. We didn’t come ready to play.”

Coeur d’Alene returns to action Thursday at home vs. Post Falls in 5A Inland Empire League play.

Lakeland, ranked third in 4A in this week’s state media poll, returns to action next Tuesday at Moscow in a 4A IEL game.

It was Lakeside’s first victory over Genesis Prep since the Jaguars joined the North Star League in the 2015-16 season.

This year, games against Genesis Prep do not count in the league standings as some of the league schools refused to play the Jaguars, though Genesis Prep will join the other North Star teams for the 1A Division II District 1 tournament.

Talon Twoteeth also scored 12 points for Lakeside (10-0), ranked No. 1 in this week’s state media poll.

“It was a real ugly game,” Lakeside coach James Twoteeth said. “We weren’t hitting shots at all. But we needed a game like this. We kinda had to grind out a win.”

Lakeside lost junior Kenyon Spotted Horse to a sprained ankle two minutes into the game. Another junior, JJ Hall, sat much of the game in foul trouble.

In their absence, James Twoteeth praised the play of reserves Vander Brown, a freshman who scored 10 points, and Jasper Abuan, a junior.

“They came and played good defense,” Twoteeth said.
