PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Timberlake tops Priest River, snaps 8-game losing skid

| January 19, 2020 1:00 AM

PRIEST RIVER — Jacob James scored 17 points, hitting 11 of 15 from the foul line in the fourth quarter, as the Timberlake Tigers beat the Priest River Spartans 56-40 in the Battle for the Buck spirit game on Saturday.

Wyatt Dickinson scored 13 points, Zach Yetter 12 and Jack McDonald 10 for Timberlake (2-10, 1-0 IML), which led 23-13 at halftime.

“The kids were flying around on the court defensively in the first half,” said Timberlake coach Mike Menti, whose team snapped an eight-game losing streak. “That really set the tone for the game. You just never know in those spirit games, so we really stressed defense, and the boys did a good job in the first half. I’m very, very proud of how hard they worked.”

Timberlake won the Buck.

Timberlake travels to Bonners Ferry on Jan. 28.

Caden Brennan scored 17 points for Priest River (3-5, 0-1).

POST FALLS — Alex Horning scored nine of his 19 points in the third quarter, and the Trojans scored 25 points in the period to pull away after leading the Tigers 31-25 at halftime of the nonleague game at The Arena.

“The first half we were going through the motions,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said, noting the nonleague game coming hours following a league victory the night before. “It was more focus and energy in the third quarter.”

Caden McLean added 11 points for Post Falls (14-3), and James Lee had seven rebounds — five on the offensive glass.

“James Lee did a phenomenal job on the boards for us,” Mike McLean said. “Zack Rodriguez and Riley Peterson and Josiah Shields did a good job off the bench, playing team defense and controlling the boards. We outrebounded them by double digits.”

Miles Heath scored 11 points for Lewis and Clark (2-10).

Post Falls travels to Coeur d’Alene on Thursday for a 5A Inland Empire League game.
