Ex-Cd’A High kicker Harrison
earns Phil Steele
freshman honors
After a debut season which saw him finish 12 of 12 kicking field goals, kicker Seth Harrison, a redshirt freshman from Coeur d’Alene High, received first team NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Freshman All-America honors from Phil Steele Publications, it was announced Wednesday.
Harrison took over as EWU’s starting kicker three games into the season and ended up going 12 of 12 kicking field goals for the Eagles. The 2018 graduate of Coeur d’Alene High also made 50 of 53 extra points and handled kickoffs for EWU.
Previously, he earned honorable mention Freshman All-America honors from Hero Sports.
“Seth started the season as a backup and ended as the guy at our kicker position,” Eastern coach Aaron Best said in a news release. “He followed our perfect 2018 season kicking field goals with one of his own. We’re excited to see him continue to grow and compete for more.”
Harrison was 31st in field goals nationally with an average of 1.09 per game, including four field goals — the second time in four games he did that — in a 48-5 victory over Idaho State on Nov. 9. He had makes of 40, 36, 21 and 36 in the first half, and his 40-yarder was a career long. He also had 10 kickoffs for a 57.5 average with one touchback.
Harrison was also 50 of 53 on extra points in 2019, having a string of 22 straight makes from Oct. 5 until missing his first attempt at Cal Poly on Nov. 16. He also averaged 52.9 yards on 78 kickoffs (six touchbacks).
Harrison didn’t even start out the year as EWU’s kicker. That role fell to junior Andre Slyter, who missed the second half of the Lindenwood game on Sept. 7 and every game after that. Harrison and Slyter replaced EWU career and single season kick scoring leader Roldan Alcobendas, who was a perfect 16 of 16 kicking field goals in 2018 to win the Fred Mitchell Award as the top placekicker in the nation (all levels but FBS).
Boise State promotes Kiesau
to offensive coordinator
BOISE — Boise State promoted Eric Kiesau to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Broncos coach Bryan Harsin announced Wednesday.
The 2020 season will be Kiesau’s fourth with the Broncos, having previously served as wide receivers coach in each of his first three years, and adding co-offensive coordinator to his title in 2019.
“Eric Kiesau did a great job working with our offense this past year, helping us win another conference championship,” Harsin said in a news release. “He’s been phenomenal with our wide receivers, but he played quarterback and he’s coached QBs at the highest level. He knows what we’re trying to do, and I’m fired up to see him take this offense, continue to grow and develop it, and help us improve as we try to win another Mountain West Championship.”
Kiesau has previously served as offensive coordinator at Colorado (2009-10), Washington (2012-13) and Fresno State (2016), and was the interim offensive coordinator at Kansas over the final five games of the 2014 season and the interim head coach at Fresno State over the final four games of the 2016 season.
He has also previously coached QBs at Washington, Fresno State and Colorado, and assisted with quarterbacks at Alabama while serving as an analyst for the Crimson Tide in 2015, when the team won the national championship.
With Kiesau serving as co-offensive coordinator this past season, the Broncos finished ranked 19th nationally in scoring, averaging 34.7 points per game.
Originally from Pasadena, Calif., Kiesau graduated from Glendale High and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in communications from Portland State, where he started at quarterback. He also garnered All-America accolades while playing at Glendale Community College.
