HEALTH CARE: 21st century concerns

| January 12, 2020 12:00 AM

I was wondering why so many families and friends do not place their unhealthy or mentally challenged relatives in one of the many acceptable places where the patient will receive professional assistance and care when it is no longer possible, either financially or personally, for in-home care (by caregivers or family) and is no longer helpful or meeting the needs of the patient.

Many are left to be guilt-induced into keeping them at home (even though it is not in their best interest) by other family members and friends, and labeled as unloving and disrespectful when it is clear that that situation isn’t improving the quality of their family member. This is not the 1800s and there are now many resources for this matter. Many still think they are going to be “put away” in a facility for the deranged.

I feel the immediate family should be making this decision, not nieces, nephews, aunts, etc. It really doesn’t make sense to have all these people’s advice and opinions, especially when they do not have to deal with the situation on a daily basis.

There should be one plan and should be followed through. Too many people getting involved is too confusing and causes conflict with the patient, family and the chosen assistance. This decision can make everyone’s lives less stressful and difficult.
