Post Falls second, Cd'A third at Rollie Lane
NAMPA — Roddy Romero (106 pounds) and A.J. De La Rosa (145) won individual titles for Post Falls, which finished runner-up in the Rollie Lane Invitational at the Ford Idaho Center on Saturday.
“Both Roddy and A.J. did a really, really good job this weekend,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “Both faced some adversity, and were fourth seeds in their brackets where they could have been seeded a little higher. They both had to beat a No. 1 seed on the way through, and to win the brackets they did says a lot about them.”
Isaac Jessen was third at 132, Lane Reardon sixth at 132 for the Trojans, who finished third in 2019 after winning four straight titles from 2015-18. Brelane Huber was third in the girls tournament at 130 pounds for Post Falls.
4A Kuna won the tournament with 189 points, followed by Post Falls (171.5), Coeur d’Alene (147), Nampa (138) and Lakeland (137).
“It was a great team race, and an exciting one,” Reardon said. “It really came down to the last couple of rounds and the consolation semifinals. We started with six on top (winners bracket) and wound up with four placers, and had three or four guys close to placing. We’re proud of the guys who competed and the progress we’re making this season.”
Coeur d’Alene’s Drew Roberts was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 138-pound title after beating Kuna’s Dante Roggio by a 14-3 major decision.
Gunner Giulio was second at 160, Dom Jessos fifth at 120 and Nolan Randles fifth at 145 for Coeur d’Alene.
“I thought we wrestled really well,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “To finish third, it was a big accomplishment with only 12 guys. The guys wrestled tough all weekend, and it was a tough duty. All of our placers did really well and everyone that came down won a match. It’s a long season, and we need to stay injury free and pushing toward that big one at the end of the season.”
Freshman Alyssa Randles won the 123-pound title in the girls tournament in Coeur d’Alene.
“She did an awesome job all weekend,” Moffat said. “She controlled the girl in the finals the entire time. She just loves to go out and compete, and really enjoys wrestling. I was really happy for her.”
Lakeland was fourth with five placers overall.
Riley Siegford was third at 138, Alex Edeblute fourth at 126, Rhonin Edwards fourth at 152, Colton Boettcher fourth at 170 and Sam Feusier sixth at 285 for Lakeland.
“I was really happy with their performance,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “Some of the guys wrestled above their seed.”
Wen Suko was third in the girls tournament at 109 pounds for Lakeland.
Isaiah Evans was runner-up at 132 for Timberlake.
Whitcomb shines for
Lake City at Pacific Northwest Classic
SPOKANE VALLEY — After the Tri-State Invitational, Lake City coach Corey Owen had a chat with junior Matthew Whitcomb about his showing in the tournament, where he went 2-2 and didn’t place.
“He’s such a talented wrestler, but he wasn’t letting it all hang out,” Owen said.
Whitcomb received the message and answered with the 182-pound championship at the Pacific Northwest Classic at University High.
“It’s the first tournament he’s won,” Owen said. “He had two major decisions and two pins,” Owen said of Whitcomb. “He just poured it on and dominated a very tough bracket.”
Lake City finished fifth. Flathead of Kalispell won the tournament with 214.5 points.
Other Lake City placers were Mahlon Clark (second at 195), Seth Nutting (second at 170), Porter Howard (third at 160), Owen Hughes (third at 285) and Connor Dremann (fifth at 220).
“We’re making improvements each week,” Owen said. “We’re excited with how the season has been going.”
Lake City will compete in the River City Duals next Friday and Saturday at Post Falls High.
