Emerald Creek rockhound site re-opens in May

The Emerald Creek Garnet rock collecting site will open Memorial Day.

The Forest Service, which manages the site, charges a $5 fee per child up to 12 years old, and $15 per adult. The site will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays from May 22 through Sept. 7 or until the available garnet area material is exhausted, according to the Forest Service.

Site preparation that included tree removal and excavation caused the popular rockhounding site to be closed last year.

“It will be great to have the site re-opened this year and I expect it to be busy.” said Christine Plourde, of the St. Joe Ranger District.

Visitors are advised to check the Idaho Panhandle National Forests website for specific information. No amenities such as food and water are available at the site. Only cash or check is accepted on site. For additional information please contact the St. Joe Ranger District at 208-245-2531.
