INMATES: A major gamble

| February 14, 2020 12:00 AM

Before an inmate is housed in a jail/prison, they go through a classification system to determine where in that facility they will be housed. A very important aspect of that classification system is their prior criminal history. To assume that a person up for release into a re-entry facility is a non-violent offender because he is serving time for a non-violent offense is a HUGE mistake! I have not read anywhere that a person’s prior criminal record is considered prior to being sent to a re-entry facility. If it is not, it most certainly should be.

A crook is a crook. They spit on the sidewalk today and commit murder tomorrow. OK, a wide range I agree, but not too far off, just ask a cop. Another unknown, to everyone but the crook, is how many crimes they have committed where they didn’t get caught. In other words, this ain’t their first rodeo.

There are most definitely prisoners who turn their lives around, no question about it. They are FAR outnumbered by those who don’t and those who won’t.
