COEUR d’ALENE — When they needed a big-time effort, the Lake City Timberwolves cast a Spell(man) to slow down visiting Lewiston.

Junior Nate Spellman, a 6-foot-6 post, held George Forsmann, a 6-6 junior post, to 10 points on the night as Lake City downed the Bengals 65-59 in a 5A Inland Empire League game Thursday night.

“Nate did a fantastic job on their big kid,” Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. “He did a good job of limiting his touches and was just fantastic on the glass. He was ultra physical, which was awesome to see, kept him out of the paint and was just a huge presence down low tonight. Lewiston’s a good team and hit 11 3-pointers, but we limited their free-throw attempts and did a better job of keeping the ball in front of us.”

Freshmen Zach Johnson and Kolton Mitchell scored 18 and 15 points, respectively, for Lake City (13-5, 2-2 5A IEL), which visits Lewiston (11-5, 2-2) on Tuesday.

“It was a fantastic team effort tonight,” Reed said. “Kolton was just outstanding tonight. To have him step up in the biggest game they’ve played for us thus far, it was huge.”
