ACQUITTAL: Nothing to celebrate
The results of the impeachment process: a win for the Republicans and a loss for the Republic.
Seventy-five percent of those polled wanted to hear testimony from four members of the president’s cabinet; yet, the Republican-controlled Senate would not let that happen. I believe the Democrats proved their case but their two articles for impeachment did not warrant the president’s removal from office — censure would have been more appropriate. From the outset it was obvious that the Senate would acquit the president. I didn’t, however, expect that they would deny the electorate the right to hear testimony from all previously subpoenaed cabinet members. What was to be a fair trial turned out to be an insult on the intelligence of the people of our nation.
It seems that the president and many members of Congress have lost all conscience. Since House subpoenas were ignored by the president and the Senate failed to request full disclosure, I can only assume that the president and the Republican members of the Senate believe that the withheld testimony would be incriminating. Have we lost all integrity? If so, what do we have left? God help us!
