ELECTION: Casting a dark cloud

| February 5, 2020 12:00 AM

We, of the working, lower and non-ruling classes are apparently expected to vote in the election this fall. It’s the responsible, democratic thing to do, after all. It’s our duty. But this election is a little different, as we all know. We’re stuck with a president who, among other things, has a co-conspirator doing time, just as he would be doing — for a number of crimes — if he weren’t the president. That is to say, if he were one of us.

But here’s the particular rub. Our election this fall was in the process of being rigged (and may still be) when the whistleblower blew the whistle. That led to Trump’s impeachment, and days of damning testimony laid out against him. But the strong consensus, at this point, is that he’ll be exonerated.

We’re to believe that we live in a democracy and that we make our voices heard in this democracy when we vote. That’s what our children hear in school. But we hear a very different message when Senate Republicans let a proven practitioner of election fraud off the hook. And to do what? Whatever he chooses to do, apparently.

Where are we, exactly, I’d like to know. And where do we go from here?
