PREP WRESTLING: Cook helps Trojans win Wild tourney

RATHDRUM — Post Falls senior Tyler Cook just went for it on Saturday afternoon in the George Wild Invitational at Lakeland High.

And his coaches couldn’t be happier with that.

Cook pinned Kyle Siebert of St. Maries at 3 minutes, 43 seconds in the 220-pound championship, one of six individual champions for the Trojans in a team title.

“We’ve just been impressed with how Tyler has come into the season and changed,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “His work ethic has gotten stronger, he’s gotten stronger and put in the work. He’s just going after it right now. Each time he’s stepped on the mat, there’s an extra pop in him and he’s finishing moves. It’s been impressive what he’s been doing.”

Tyson Barnhart (106 pounds), Connor McCarroll (113), Roddy Romero (120), Ethan Miller (160) and Isaiah Laguna (195) won titles for Post Falls, which finished with 264 points.

“Our guys wrestled really well today,” Reardon said. “Our second team (which finished fifth with 85 points) wrestled really well today and are starting to put things together. It’s really encouraging to see.”

Lakeland senior Riley Siegford beat Lane Reardon of Post Falls 6-3 for the 145 pound title, one of four champions for the Hawks, who were runner-up with 193 points.

“Riley went out and scored a takedown early on,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “Lane reversed him to tie it after the first period. It was a hard fought battle and Riley controlled the momentum after the first. It was just a fun match to watch.”

Devon Suko (170), John White and Sam Feusier (285) also claimed titles for Lakeland, which competes at St. Maries on Tuesday.

The tournament, previously scheduled for Kellogg High, was moved to Lakeland after a COVID-19 outbreak within the Wildcat program.

“It was all very last minute, but we wanted all the kids to have a chance to wrestle,” Edelblute said. “Watching them compete was really nice to see.”
