PREP WRESTLING: Parson puts Lake City in win column again; Brunner pins twice for Viks

| December 19, 2020 1:13 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — For three years, Lake City High senior Logan Parson had to remain patient to get his shot at heavyweight in the Timberwolves lineup.

Stuck behind Owen Hughes, a three-time state finalist and 2020 5A champion, Parson is making the most of his chance in the starting lineup, pinning Jackson Richter in 1 minute, 46 seconds to clinch a 42-41 dual win over the Bonners Ferry Badgers on Friday at Lake City High.

“He looks really good this season,” Owen said of Parson, who also clinched the team’s dual against Moscow on Thursday. “I feel bad that he’s been stuck behind Owen the last three years, but he’s getting his chance now. He’s wrestled well, and that comes from hard work and paying his dues the last three years. He’s just going out and taking care of business.”

Sophomore Elijah Aguilera (126 pounds) and Matthew Whitcomb (182/195) both had two pins for Lake City, which also beat Timberlake 51-21.

“Elijah had a bad shoulder, but toughed it out and looked great tonight,” Owen said. “We’re hoping with the younger guys that they can continue to build confidence as the season goes on.”

Coeur d’Alene sophomore Bear Brunner had two pins on the night for the Vikings, who beat Timberlake 60-27 and Bonners Ferry 70-18.

“Bear has some talent,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “He’s just a sophomore, but a real explosive kid. He has a lot of talent for wrestling, but we want him to use some more technique. He competed really well tonight.”

Drew Roberts (160), Nolan Randles (152), Gunner Giulio (170) and Dax Larsen (126) went unbeaten on the night for Coeur d’Alene.

“It was good for Drew, Nolan and Gunner to get some tough matches tonight,” Moffat said. “We’re tough in the middle and upper weights, but just a little inexperienced at those lower weights,” Moffat said. “All of them are battling though. We’ve got three matches under our belt now and need to get rolling.”

Coeur d’Alene will send a mix of JV and varsity wrestlers to St. Maries on Tuesday.

Lake City is scheduled to return to action on Jan. 7-8 at the Rollie Lane Invitational at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.
