PREP WRESTLING: Lakeland adjusts lineup, downs Coeur d'Alene

| December 18, 2020 1:12 AM

RATHDRUM — As wrestling goes this year, it’s a work in progress.

So when it came time to set his lineup for Thursday’s long awaited season-opening dual, Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute arranged his team in weights that played to its strengths.

The Hawks finished with four pins against Coeur d’Alene, clinching a 44-38 win over the Vikings on a pin at 195 pounds by John White.

“The kids from both teams wrestled tough,” Edelblute said. “We’re still working on getting those kids in the right weight class. We bumped our 98-pounder (Matt Williams) up and moved everyone up a spot where we thought they’d perform. It was good wrestling on both sides. It was great to get back to wrestling and doing the sport we love.”

Hayden Berger (220), Matt Williams (106) and Lucas Williams (132) also had pins for Lakeland, which hosts the George Wild Invitational on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. With Kellogg unable to host the tourney due to being in quarantine, Lakeland stepped up and offered to host.

Mason Keough (138), Nolan Randles (152), Gunner Giulio (170) and Bear Brunner (182) had pins for Coeur d’Alene, which faces Timberlake and Bonners Ferry tonight at Lake City High starting at 5:30.

“We competed hard,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “But we spotted them 18-0 with three forfeits, and it’s tough to dig out of a hole like that. It was nice to wrestle someone other than ourselves. Overall, I was really pleased with how we wrestled.”

Seniors Parson, Whitcomb

deliver Lake City dual wins

MOSCOW — Lake City coach Corey Owen knows that with some inexperience at the lower weights, he’ll ask a lot of his upperclassmen to deliver — at least early in the season.

Senior Logan Parson made short work of Moscow’s Oscar Kearney in the 285-pound bout, clinching a dual win for the Timberwolves against the Bears at Bear Den.

Later, Whitcomb — in a rematch of the 2020 state 5A championship match at 182 pounds — beat Lewiston’s Reuben Thill 6-5 and Parson pinned Matthew Collins in 10 seconds to clinch a 42-39 dual win over the Bengals.

“Logan just dominated physically tonight,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “He went out from the whistle and dictated both of his matches and got two really quick pins and didn’t leave anything to chance tonight.”

Against Lewiston, Lake City trailed 39-15 heading into the 182-pound match where Owen opted to put JV wrestler Grey Shinkle in, and bump Whitcomb up to face Thill. Shinkle pinned Brenden Thill.

“It was a big risk, but Matt was unbelievable,” Owen said. “He really clutched up against a good kid from Lewiston. Overall, I was happy with our performance. The kids are responding when they lose. We had a great month of practice, and I’m really enjoying this group of kids.”

Blaine Leonard (120) and Whitcomb also had pins against Moscow for Lake City, which also claimed three wins by forfeit.

Lake City hosts Timberlake and Bonners Ferry tonight starting at 5:30.
