Dr. Gregory "Greg" D. McKim, 78

| December 13, 2020 1:00 AM

Dr. Gregory "Greg" D. McKim, 78, of Tigard, Ore., passed away Nov. 18, 2020, from a sudden coronary event. His loss was completely unexpected and the family is shocked and deeply saddened.

Greg is survived by his wife, Darlene (Dari); daughters Bryn (Terry) Wilson of Beaverton, Ore., and Eryn (Rob) Wettlaufer of Tigard; grandchildren Greg, Mallory and Andrew; mother Eleanora of Mesa, Ariz.; brothers Mike (Ingrid) of Spokane, Wash., and Jeff of Mesa; and sisters Kathleen and Cindy of Mesa.

Greg was born on Feb. 14, 1942, to Gerald and Eleanora McKim in Wallace, Idaho. Greg attended Wallace High School, graduating in 1960. He started dating Darlene "Dari" when they were 15 and 16 after his friends dared him to ask her to dance. They were married in 1963 and recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.

Greg received a master's degree in biology from the University of Oregon and began studying medicine at U of O Med School in 1965 (now known as OHSU). He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1968 and spent eight years completing his residency, stationed in Germany and Hawaii with his wife and twin daughters.

Greg specialized in radiology and after leaving the Army as a Major, moved back to Idaho and was employed by Magic Valley Hospital in Twin Falls until he opened his own practice in 1982. During that time, he also worked at Jerome Hospital and Wood River Hospital (now St. Luke's) in Sun Valley. His favorite activities were backpacking and hiking in the Sawtooth Mountains, fly-fishing and frying up trout for breakfast, cross-country skiing, skiing Baldy, and one memorable 11,000-plus-foot summit on Castle Peak near Stanley, Idaho.

Greg was offered an opportunity to share a practice in McCall, Idaho, and moved there in 1992. He enjoyed living in that area and spent his time off hiking and cross-country skiing in the Payette National Forest, and fishing and boating on Payette Lake.

Greg and Dari visited a small town near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in 2003 and fell in love with the area. They purchased a vacation home and delighted in their new adventure, making many new friends, learning Spanish, walking endless miles on the beach looking for treasures, fishing and snorkeling and riding ATV's. They have spent winters there for the last 16 years, volunteering at the local medical clinic and rescuing their beloved dogs, Mocha and Kiko.

Greg retired in 2010 and he and Dari moved to Summerfield in Tigard, a 55-plus golfing community. They wanted to live closer to their children and grandchildren and enjoyed being able to see them more often.

Greg's absolute favorite activity was golfing. He belonged to the Blue Lakes Country Club in Twin Falls and enjoyed golfing with his large group of friends. He continued his passion in McCall but had minimal time off and played mostly in couple's tournaments. He was an excellent golfer and spent the last 10 years of retirement in Tigard playing several times a week. Greg was one of the best golfers in Summerfield and a popular player.

Anyone who knew Greg will remember his intelligence, sense of humor, kindness, love of the outdoors, watching U of O sports, and his adventurous and warm personality. His family and friends will miss him more than words can say.

Contributions in memory of Greg McKim can be made to the ASPCA or your local Humane Society. We hope to host a celebration of life in the summer of 2021.
